The Landing is a unique 1000-acre property in New Zealand with four extraordinary Residences, six private beaches, lush wetlands, an award-winning vineyard, and garden-to-plate dining. The property is located in the Bay of Islands - a natural paradise, with more than 140 islands dotted along its coast, and miles of secluded white-sand beaches to explore. The beauty of the property is celebrated through the experiences on offer: from paddle-boarding to skippered big-game fishing, guided kiwi-spotting walks, wine tasting, foraging and more.
The Landing is the vision and personal passion of Peter Cooper, the founder and Executive Chairman of Cooper and Company, a private investment firm behind Britomart in downtown Auckland and the soon to open Hotel Britomart (which will have 99 rooms, including five Landing Suites with large outdoor sky gardens).
Commented Cooper: “The Landing was founded on the principles of balance and respect for the land and its heritage. The aim is to realise the potential of the land while still preserving its special ecological and historical character.”
The architecturally designed Residences at The Landing hold a modern, mid-Pacific aesthetic and each boasts a stunning collection of New Zealand art and artifacts. The properties were designed by Cheshire Architects. “The Residences honour the landforms and the long human occupation of the outstanding site,” said Pip Cheshire. “Within the gentle folds of the land, luxurious occupation is suggested with simple, familiar shapes nestled among coastal planting, gardens and vineyards. We have constructed each of them using a carefully selected mix of timber and stone, and then left them to gently weather.”
VINEYARD
The story of The Landing Wines began 10 years ago with the planting of Chardonnay and Syrah. Today, the vineyard produces Rosé, Syrah, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay and plantings have expanded over recent years to include Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The Landing Wines have received several significant accolades. Guided by the vineyard manager, guests are welcome to visit The Landing wine cellar and taste wines from the vineyard. An onsite winery and tasting room is scheduled to open in early 2020.
UNIQUE EXPERIENCES AT THE LANDING
FISHING, DIVING AND WATERSPORTS: The Bay of Islands is famous for its impressive game fish, including marlin, tuna and shark. The area also offers spectacular snorkelling and scuba diving, including wreck diving and diving in season for scallops and crayfish. The Landing’s resident boat, Iti Rangi, is available for skippered half and full-day fishing and sightseeing trips. For longer excursions, the 82-foot luxury fishing yacht Ata Rangi is often available for charters. The Bay of Islands and wider Northland region are excellent locations for sailing, kayaking, waterskiing, surfing and a wide range of other watersports. Many of these can be enjoyed directly from The Landing.
HIKING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, BEACHES: The Landing property is crossed with a network of boardwalks, walking trails and mountain bike tracks, leading through native bush reserves, wetland areas and farm paddocks. This network makes for an excellent way to explore the property, taking
in magnificent rural and sea views and many sites of historical interest. The six private beaches at The Landing can be accessed for safe boating and swimming at all tides, making it ideal for family beach holidays. Hundreds of other beautiful beaches are also within easy reach of The Landing. These range from quiet, secluded white-sand bays accessible only by boat, to the wild West Coast surf beaches that are a short helicopter flight away.
OCEAN AND KAURI FOREST TOUR: Guests can enjoy an exclusive Māori cultural experience with a guided tour across the picturesque waters of the Bay of Islands and into the depths of an ancient native kauri. Guests will learn how traditional Māori used the forest to live and support their growing families and the guide will share their extensive knowledge of the birds, trees and insects and demonstrate how their ancestors used the different plants and trees to make their clothing, medicines, musical instruments and many other things.
